What is an AI teammate?
An AI teammate is AI that works as a member of your team instead of a tool your team has to run. It has its own name and account, works in the email, chat and meeting apps your team already uses, and takes recurring work from request to done.
Most AI tools become another project.
Teams have tried AI assistants and automation tools. Each one is another app to learn, another login, and someone to set it up and keep it running. The bill arrives by seat or by token, whether or not the work gets done.
An AI teammate turns that around. It joins the team, and the work comes off people's plates.
AI teammate vs AI assistant vs AI agent
The terms overlap, so here's how they differ in practice.
| Compared | AI assistantcopilots and chatbots | Automation toolworkflow builders | AI agent platform | AI teammate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A chat window that answers when asked | Rules that move data between apps | A kit for building your own agents | A colleague with its own name and account |
| Who keeps it running | Each person, prompt by prompt | You do, and you fix it when a step breaks | You do, or a partner you hire | The provider does |
| How much of the job it does | One answer or draft at a time | The fixed steps you defined | Whatever you build | Recurring work across several steps and tools, start to finish |
| Where your team uses it | Its own app or a side panel | It runs in the background | Wherever you build it in | Email, chat and meetings, like any colleague |
| How it's usually priced | Per seat, often plus usage | Per task or run | Per seat, plus usage | Per teammate |
| Where it can work | Across many platforms | Across many platforms | Within that platform | Inside one workplace suite (for Invellis, Microsoft 365) |

What an AI teammate does, by team
Work that still needs doing, taken off your team's plate. A few examples:
Finance
Matches payables to the general ledger, finds the line that doesn't match, and sends it to the right person.
Sales
Has the Monday pipeline report ready in your format, and flags the deals that have gone quiet.
HR
Answers policy questions in Teams from your handbook, and shows where the answer came from.
Operations
Pulls the week's updates into one status report, and follows up on what's late.
Engineering
Drafts release notes from the merged work, and asks the team about anything unclear.
Marketing
Has the campaign report ready before Monday's meeting, with a summary of what moved.
What makes it a teammate
Its own identity
It has its own name and account in your company's systems, so your IT team can see it, set what it can reach, and switch it off. Every action shows as its own. How governance works
It works where your team works
People message it, email it or talk to it in their own words, in Teams and Outlook. There's no new app to learn.
It learns on the job
It asks you and your colleagues how you like things done, the way a new hire would. It learns from the documents and information you share, and the meetings and calls it joins. It keeps getting better. What it learns stays with your teammate and is never used to train AI.
It takes the next step on its own
It follows up, closes out open items, and lets you know when they're done.
Does an AI teammate replace people?
No. It takes the repetitive, time-consuming work off your team's plate, so your people can focus on the work that needs their expertise. Invellis aims to give each team 5 to 25 hours back every week. We build AI to help people, not replace them.
How to choose an AI teammate
Six questions to ask any provider:
- Who sets it up and keeps it running? Look for a provider that handles the setup and the upkeep, so it isn't another project for your team.
- Can your IT team govern it? It should have its own identity, access set by your policies, a full record of what it did, and an off switch, all managed from the admin tools your IT team already uses.
- Will it pass your security and compliance review? Ask for the provider's security documentation, where your data is stored, and whether it signs a data processing agreement (DPA). In a regulated industry, check it can sign what you need, such as a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement.
- Is your data used to train AI? The answer should be no.
- Can you forecast what it will cost? Ask whether tokens, usage or overages can change the bill. Per-seat and per-token bills grow with use, and a busy month can bring a surprise. With a flat fee per teammate, a busy month costs the same as a quiet one, so you can budget for it.
- Can you try it on your real work first? A trial on your own work shows what it delivers before you commit.

One flat monthly fee per teammate, with no token charges or overages. Free for 30 days, then you decide.
Questions
Is an AI teammate the same as an AI agent?
An AI teammate is a kind of AI agent: software that can take steps on its own. The difference is how it reaches you. It joins your team as a colleague with its own name and account, and the provider sets it up and keeps it running, instead of handing you a platform to build on.
How is an AI teammate different from Microsoft Copilot?
Copilot makes each person faster at their own work. An AI teammate takes a recurring workflow off the team entirely and owns it, under its own account. The full comparison.
Do I need to be technical?
No. We handle the setup, integrations and maintenance. Your team works with its teammate through Teams and Outlook, just like another colleague. If you can send a message, you can work with it.
Is it safe for company data?
It works inside your Microsoft 365 under your policies, with its own identity and a full audit trail. Your data is never used to train AI. The details are in the Trust Center.
